Re: GT should i buy one
Awhile ago a fellow South African asked me about the GT, problems and my experiences with it etc as he was looking to buy one. Here was my response
The first thing I love about the car is its looks, beautiful, elegant and stylish, it turns heads! It’s nice that there aren’t many in SA, I hardly see them on the roads so it’s nice to have some exclusivity unlike the many of the slk, gti and bmw drivers.
I Have had a few problems ( It’s an Alfa haha) but they have all been sorted out. I had problems with my clutch at about 45000km, there was something wrong with the clutch pin and it was fixed by the dealer, apparently it is known problem and there is a list of VIN numbers which states which cars have the problems.
Being a turbo you get some turbo lag ( it may be more evident in CT due to the altitude) now and then but I find if you keep the revs at about 2000rpm on pull off you can avoid the lag. I once experienced a major amount of power loss and turbo lag, this was due to the EGR valve being dirty and clogged up as well as old turbo hoses. Due to the car being a diesel its smokes a lot more so the valve got dirty so now every time I have the car serviced I get them to clean the valve, not a major issue. Sa has very low quality fuel which will affect the performance of the car, I only fill up with Shell V power diesel and Sasol Ultra low Sulphur diesel, I find those two brands are the best. I also use an injector cleaner (wynns) about every 5 or 6 times I fill up.
The other issues are all minor niggles, my windows sometimes don’t always go up at once, you have to lift it inch by inch, but a quick fix to the problem is a simple reset where you hold the window buttons up for 30secs and then down for 30secs. I have a small rattle in the car, which is intermittent, which is why the dealer still hasn’t found it, but I’ve got the BOSE stereo and listen to music so it doesn’t really bother me.
Some passengers have mentioned that there is excessive wind noise when driving at high speeds, however this is due to the doors being frameless so it is expected, and you can get a spray that goes on the seals to reduce this anyway, but once again I have the stereo on so it’s never bothered me.
The engine oil warning sometimes acts up, it will tell you that the car is low on oil but when you have it checked there is still ample oil in the engine so I have the oil checked every 3 or so times I fill up.
Being a diesel engine it is very economic, depending on how you drive, If I drive fast I usually get about 9.3-10 litres per 100km and if I driver conservatively I easily get about 7 litres to 100km. The diesel is very torquey so it makes over taking cars and driving up hills and awesome experience, Im sure in CT there are plenty of hills and winding roads for you to play around on.
The only thing I dislike about the 1.9JTD is the sound, although it is much quieter than many of the other diesel cars on the road, nothing beats the sound of V6!
The doors of the car dent quite easily so be careful where you park.
With regards to the “new facelift” you mentioned, there is a “new” GT the Alfa GT Q2, but styling changes are minor, If I’m not mistaken it came out in 2007 in SA. Aesthetically on the outside it only has different rims, chrome mirrors and chrome on the front grill and a Q2 badge on the back. The inside the dash etc is all the same, only the seats and steering wheel have red stitching.
Performance wise the Q2 has a new limited slip differential which is basically more traction control. It makes the car go a lot faster as it has more grip, the 0-100 is about 8.2 from the old one being about 9.4. If you want more power for the car you can get remap of the ECU done ( cars computer) and you should see gains of up to 20-30% there is a GT on the forum that has been remapped to 200bhp!
The Alfa forum is very helpful and there is a vast amount of knowledge on the site so if you do have any problems there is no doubt that someone has a solution to it. All the guys there are very friendly and questions get answered almost immediately.
Browse the forum, there a few posts about the Gt and experiences other people have had with them.
The few problems that the GT has are all minor in compared to the great driving pleasure it has given me and I would definitely recommend buying one!
Hope this helps convince you!!!
