Got the same on my 156 2.0ts, at 23.2K miles (36.6K KM!!) - but have you notice a tinny rattle as you pull away, or blip the throttle, as well, until the engine has warmed. mine has that and the diesel sound for a few seconds, and i emailed the Alfa tech on another Alfa help site, and he said was the variater just starting to loose the plot. But apparently until it sounds like a london taxi on a december morning, then it isn't totally dead. when this happens performance and economy will drop right off apparently (?). Mine is in for service sat, and with 5 months warrenty left I am hoping they will replace it, cos it is a major job - if you get it done, have the Cam belt and tensioner replaced, as the belt has to come off for the variator anyway. Also the tech advised replacing the oil feed valve or something at the same time - Reckon on a big bill (GBP600, variator apparently is £100) if it blows, so start saving now!!!
