Stupid question...

Hi Guys

Stupid question for you all, so I'm waiting for at least most of you to call me an idiot :P

With the bonnet open, directly infront of your engine, under the dip stick (no, not me) there is what appears to be a metal shield... you know the one, with the warning that it gets very hot so you shouldn't touch it...

What is it for?
And what if something decided it wanted to create a very, very thin crack in what appears to be the 'top layer' of this?

Thanks guys

Re: Stupid question...

It's the heat shield that protects the plastic fan blades from melting and itf it cracks just it a bigger washer to the bolt the crack is starting from.

Re: Stupid question...

Are you talking about the exhaust manifold heat shield? It's there to keep the parts above it a bit cooler. A small crack shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Stupid question...

Mine was quite badly cracked... (car is from Nov 2001). Anyway had it replaced at an Alfa garage near Milton Keynes when I was over at Christmas. I can get the details if you want.

Anyway, cost me around 20 for a new heat shield and not much more than that to fit it. Was a bit difficult he said as the fixings had eroded. Anyway I asked him what's the worst that can happen if I'd had left it and he said it's normally okay, but it could have come off whilst I was driving and ripped the fan apart
