Well, I had just got clutch (uprated) and dual-mass flywheel done, then read the thread on waterpumps seizing on 16v diesels, so decided to do some preventative maintenance and get a new waterpump. It went in, sure enough the waterpump bearing was not far off seizing, and it got new belts done too. Mechanic noted that timing was out and that there was evidence of someone having done some rather poor work on the engine, leaving red paint marks all over the place. Anyway, he takes it out for a test drive, it drives fine UNTIL he get it back close to his garage. Then he hears a knocking noise from the engine, which sounds serious, so he switches off, only to have it rev and run-on. Finally it stops. Cutting a long story short, the head has come off, #4 bore is "oval-shaped" and the turbo is full of oil.
expletive expletive expletive.
So, here's a car that I've spent most of the money on getting suspension & clutch related work done - lower wishbones, bushes, drop-links, clutch slave replacement, uprated clutch and flywheel - only to have the engine die like this.
If I had the tools and the experience I'd find another engine and put it in myself but I don't The rest of the car is sweet.
What do I do? The mechanic says he'll make an offer. What would I expect normally for a 2004 JTDM GT with 105k on it? And what would I get for it now with a duff engine?
BTW can't I just replace the bore sleeve as a starter or do these 16v diesels not have them?
