Ever think to yourself, maybe it would have been better to pay someone else to do it
Having read so many good reports on here, I finally took the plunge and bought a set of FSD's & Eibach springs for my bella. Being a mechanically competent Engineer, I decided to fit them myself
I started at 7 this morning and assumed it would be fairly straight forward
A. Spray copious volumes of penetrant spray on all nuts and bolts days in advance and just before starting.
B. Remove pich bolt from fork
C. Disconnect fork from wishbone
D. Tap fork off the bottom of the strut.
E. Release mounting nuts and drop strut from tower
Sounds like a reasonable approach but I should have known better really
, never make an assumption!!!!!
1. The pinch bolt was corroded to the fork.
2. As a consequence of 1, the hex drive rounded off
Dozens of cuts, ripped knuckles, a lump hammer, chisel, lots of swearing, copious buckets of coffee and finally an angle grinder later, pinch bolt cut off.
Could I drift it out
of course not! Seized solid!!!
I finally disconnected everything else and managed to remove the strut and fork and successfully drifted out the offending bolt. The lower wishbone ball joint rubber is now fecked of course
so I will have to order a new one..........make that 2
I then proceeded to assemble the replacement spring, strut and fork................but managed to misalign the strut to the top mount by about 10 degrees so when the fork is offered up, it's then presented at an angle to the lower wishbone so the bolt can't be fitted without subjecting the lower bush to excessive twist....bugger!!! Should have checked that before I removed the spring compressors
And now I can't get the spring compressors in again because the coils are closer together
I finally gave up at 6 this evening...........but on a positive note, it was fantastically sunny and warm today
and now I'm having a beer and looking forward.......with trepidation........to a fresh start in the morning.
At this rate, it's going to take me a week to change all 4 corners
Has anybody managed to do this successfully or am I being too ambitious
Please tell me it will be worth the effort and loss of blood.................and in fact am I following the correct procedure?
Advice would be much appreciated
