these engines are known to use a lot of oil so choosing to run at less than the max mark would not be a good idea.
Check the oil weekly, run at the max mark & use a 10W60 Fully Synthetic oil (ie Castrol RS 10W60).
Also, you don't say what milage this car has but the other big problem with these engines is the cambelt.
The official change point for the cambelt is 72000 miles, HOWEVER they generally don't last that long.
It is now recomended to change every 48000 miles, together with the counterbalance shaft belt and the associated tensioners.
The camshaft variator can also be a problem (a failing one will make the engine sound like a diesel at startup).
If it is still on the original variator it may be worth changing at the same time as the cambelt.
