Newbie here, I'm sure I'm not the first to have this conversation, so please excuse if I'm creating any repetition for the residents, but an oportunity has come up I need to make a decision about quickly. But I'll understand if I get a bit of a flaming for bad forum manors.
I'm currently looking for a fun diesel estate, I mountain bike most weekends, so need something to sling kit in, bike on roof or possible tow hook. Been looking at reliable but boring Germanic sheds, high prices, high miles, reliable but cost a bomb when they do go wrong, and lets face it NO passion.
A mate in the trade (Renault) just took in an Alfa 156 Veloce Sportswagon (03') with 111k miles, 1.9 JTD, FASH and has offered it to me at trade as a favour if I lend him my wife (not really, just kidding about trade price, I mean my wife). He is going to get his tech boys to check it over as best they can.
I've always thought the 'Alfa-ism's about reliability were a bit unfair, bit like all the Skoda jokes, once you've got a rep, it is hard to loose. But then reading Parkers, Whatcar etc on the readers reviews on multible forums, has made me a bit nervous.
There are people on there with no problems at all, but they seem to be in the minority.
Not really into the idea of breaking down in the middle of nowhere after hours riding and waiting for flatbeds, or the prospect of spending oodles of cash on repairs.
If the car has had a good service history and I get it serviced regularly, what can I expect in the reliability stakes from a 03 car wth over 100k on the clock?
I'm hoping you'll talk me into it, because I'm sold on every other point
