New straight through muffler installed!!!

Hi all,

A while back I went to an exhaust specialist who had designed a straight through muffler (read, much more flow) for the 147. One of the management staff has a 147 so they made one and tested it on the Dyno and got an amazing 10% more power at the wheels with it.

I decided today, after all this time, that I would not die wondering whether or not the straight through would be better than the Sebring so I booked myself in today and got this custom straight through installed.

I just got home from the exhaust people and my gawd it's loud.. so loud in fact that I don't think I can handle it... and this is coming from me! Someone who always wanted the sound to be louder!!!

The fact that I have taken off my main resonator is the reason as to why it's so loud. Cabin drone is so full on in 1st/2nd/3rd gears that I feel almost sick after driving it and I've turned so many heads driving it home, everyone was looking at me with nasty faces as my car is now way too loud!

HAHAHA. So what a waste of money. I refuse to put my resonator back on because I want the soubnd to go back to the way it was with the Sebring minus the resonator which I am now thinking was PERFECT.

So there we go, Justin the 147 guinea pig at your service!

NEVER get a straight through muffler unless you want crazy head turning sound and ear splitting, gut churning cabin drone.

PS: As far as the 10% extra power goes. I just couldn't tell the difference between it and the old Sebring.

Hey Justin,
There is a smile on my face while reading your story.
It could have been me.
Do you have some pics already of the new muffler?

I sure hope it didn't cost you too much.
So now you are going to put back on the Sebring then, huh?!
It seems like the new muffler, is simular to no exhaust at all.
Great sound okay, but people turning heads... Sorry no that is not quit my cup of tea.

WIth the new exhaust I have under my car (the JTD 16V, with the CSC oval exhaust) the sound is completely different.
When taking off in 1st the sound is a bit deeper, but when passing by and shiftig gears you hear a "wind like blowing" sound. Quit funny. But that might be, because it is a diesel. wink

Looks like it will be back on your car asap!

MY blackbox is showing some rust spots, so time to replace...or paint, but i want that sound!

Justin, do you mean you actually run the car with no mufflers at all? Did you remove all three, including the backbox??

Deng: Unfortunately I lent my camera to a friend for the weekend so there will be no pics but it looks super sweet.

147dude/Paulo: No there's a muffler there but it's a straight through design. From the outside it looks just like the Sebring, fat pipe, all chromed up but the design is a straight through, IE: You can stick a metal rod right through the hole in the muffler. Try it with your muffler and I bet the rod cannot go through as it is most likely an 's' bend design where the gasses have to go through some sort of bend before it shoots out the back.

Straight through mufflers always offer more flow but with more flow comes more noise. All race cars have straight through exhausts and yes that's why they're all so damn loud

I just drove out for some dinner and on the way back there and back I had 2 guys in hotted up Jap cars trying to race me off the lights just because I had a very loud exhaust! Funny stuff. I love but absolutely hate the attention. Hahaha

156 & WRX PPP

Thanks for the report, Justin. A few years ago when I first bought my 156, I went to a local muffler shop to change the back box. Before putting on the final one, the shop offerred to loosely fit a straight-thru muffler to see how it would sound. They welded it on just enough that it hangs onto the car, then I started the engine. As soon as I heard the note and how loud it was, I decided then and there that this wasn't the sound for Alfa!!!

So two mufflers later, I'm quite happy with the sound of the Supersprint kit, though it could do with more power gain like Novitec. wink
