I have a Q and love it-At its best over 3000rpm like the rest of the car- look for a box that has firm but smooth shifts in both modes-[Mine is a little slow 1st to 2nd in tip mode but after driving several I think they are all like that].
Clearly also check the fluid level and look around for leaks.
The gearboxes are generally very reliable and take quite a lot of abuse as long as the fluid level is correct. It has a gearbox oil stick too so its easy to check the level.
Changes should be smooth and pretty quick, sometimes there is a hesitancy at around 3000rpm which feels like its about to change gear but doesnt until it reaches 3500rpm......not sure why this is
I dont use the sport mode - dont like the way it holds on to the gears and its difficult to quickly locate the button without looking. 50% of the time I use normal mode and 50% of the time just flip it across and use the H pattern gear change like a manual car.
The car really responds to hard driving but you will find its pretty poor economy if driving in town, motorway cruising is very relaxed with revs of 3000-3500rpm when doing 70-80mph
It actually a very sports orientated auto but may take getting used to if you are used to a manual gearbox, my wife has recently started driving my Qsystem and initially thought it was a bit slow of the mark - I went for a drive in it and she said "oh it doesnt do that when I drive it".....I said you need to put your foot down a bit harder........... now I cant get her back into her own car

The 6 speed auto was phased in 2005/6 on 2.4 159's,(not 156) not many about, and fuel consumption generally not good for a diesel.
