Grinding Noise - Drive Shaft Split?

Hi All!

Experiencing a loud grinding noise from front passenger side of my 156 - Jacked up car, removed wheel and brake before powering up and putting in gear.

On closer inspection I noticed grease was dripping out of the drive shaft and then identified a split on the black seal.

Guessing this is cause of the grinding?

Whats the easiest way to deal with this? I thought i would get some experienced opinions before getting my hands dirty.

Have attached a photo which shows the split at the very top of the black seal (below hex) - if you look closely you can even see a lump of the grease sitting on the lower wisbone arm below.

As always I appreciate any help!!

Thanks Guys

you need to open the six 6mm hex heads bolts & catch the six 13mm nuts behind them.

the rubber gairot needs to be replace so that end has to come off the drive shaft to fit a new one on.

afaik the torque when tigthening those 6 bolts is 30Nm ...open to 'polite' correction.

If it's grinding you may need to get the CV joint replaced. This is usually a sign that there is no grease and dirt and grit nmay have got in causing wear and damage to the joint.

The inner one is easier than the outer as it is drifted on to splines and held with circlips ... plus you don't have to undo that hub-nut. I must confess that I actually took the complete strut off to do mine as I was replacing the lower ams at the same time.

Replace the six bolts and nuts as well ... I didn't and even though I Loctited them all, they kept coming loose. (Nylok nuts shouldn't be reused really anyway).

Thanks for all your advice everyone!

The break pads have plenty of meat on them but i noticed when i had the car in gear the drivers side wheel wasnt spinning. On closer inspection the brake was badly rubbing - I adjusted the break and the wheel started spinning normally. At the same time the grinding noise reduced significantly. That said there is still a grinding noise just not as bad.

When it comes to removing the 6mm hex heads bolts is there any easy way or do i require to remove the entire cv joint?

Thanks you

The 6mm hex bolts hold the cv joint to the drive on the gear box, so once out the end of the shaft can be moved to a position you can work on the joint. There's a couple of circlips.

An option, if you don't need to change the joint is to get stretchy join covers and a fitting cone. You stretch the cover but pulling it over the cone and the joint. Not sure how effective these are as they have to be softer rubber that the originals, but may save some time.

I realise you are in Oz but here a link to a UK site to see what I mean ... CV Boot Fitting Instructions

Don't waste your time and money with the glued repair kits ... they last about as long as chocolate does in our house ... no time at all!
