After my "repairs day" she started fantastically, without having cleaned the inside of the MAF sensor itself - just pulling everything apart, doing the reset thing (90 secs in MAR etc) seemed to help. Next morning though, cough / splutter etc as usual lol
So today I bought some of the below, got home, blasted the sensor through, had a few cups of tea, bit of TV etc, then took the missus out and CRIKEY
She certainly found her lungs again!
I'm praying this isn't some kind of placebo effect and she does exactly the same thing tomorrow morning from cold, but she was flying! So I'm hoping the £3 below just saved me £130
Basically I'm sure the thermostat needs sorting, temps sit around 50-60c when driving, and rise quite quickly to 90 when idle/in traffic etc, and that's when the chirping/squeeking sound starts.
SEARs suggested the "fan belt" (which I thought was making the noise as it only starts at 90+ so assumed this was another fan kicking in etc) is probably the Aux belt? based on the fact this ONLY happens when the temp hits 90+ does this sound right?
If I rev "slightly" above the 800rpm she idles at - the sound will go, but comes back when i release those few extra revs (and i mean only putting her to say 1000rpm). It's not noticable at all when driving, or the revs are higher than 1000rpm. I've also noticed that if I have the air-con on, she idles closer to 1000rpm than without (800rpm) related?
She also sounds quite... how to describe it.... mechanical/metally? when hitting higher revs 6k-ish, kinda like one of those wind up toys, like a metal disc spinning fast I guess?
Tractor sound - check!
What other symptons does a dodgy variator have?
