V6 Oil Filter

I thought it would be a ten minute job to change the oil. After draining the oil and unscrewing the filter I realised that it wouldnt fit through the hole that my arm was in, under the car.
I was at the point of no return as I had to hammer a screwdriver through the filter to turn it.
After much swearing I managed to force it though the suspension arms on the drivers side, and then forced the new one back through the same hole.
Is there some trick that I have missed ?
Is there some pipe or heat shield I should have removed first to get better access ?
If not, I have every respect for the grease monkeys that do this stuff daily.

I understand the 24v V6 is a pig...on my 12v V6 removing the wheel and part of the plastic protection over the wishbone area means you can put one arm over the wheel and one under. If its the same on yours thats the way to go wink

Unclip the aircon pipes and gentle push them aside, they will move enough to allow the filter to fall out.
It is very messy though.

whooo gotta ask me
one time i took it to guy who only changes oil and he after some **** was able to unsrcrew the filter but couldnt get it out neither from top nor from bottom
and he burnt his hand with the manifolds
so i was like at point of no return stuck with a loose filter
he told me needed to unpolug the exhaust from the bottom of engine
so i said no thanks andd he had a hard time screwing it back then went back to dealer and changed it on the next oil change

The Euro 2 190bhp 2.5V6 is a pig to work on. You've to loosen the air-cond pipe and I think the exhaust manifold-that's why the garage always had to wait for the engine to cool for 1-2 hours before working on it!)

I understand from an Alfa specialist that Euro3 version (192bhp) 2.5V6 is easier to do an oil change.
