Arrrgh I think my car is Dead ?????

Evening all,
I have a few questions about my car, as it may have just died.

I was just doing a sensible 45mph up the main road, when i heard an almighty scraping noise
(thought the engine tray had come off) and then a bit of a clunk, and my engine died.

The display said something about the Immobiliser, but i tried to re-set the car and it wouldnt have it.

Called the AA, who ran every diagnostic his PC could, and it brought up no errors.
the spark plugs are sparking, and everything lights up, but it makes a noise like a hairdryer when turned over.

AA guy was stumped, he thought it might have been the Cam belt, but wasnt sure.

the car is 8 month old with less than 7000 on the clock.

Any ideas ????? as she's been hauled off to leeds to get fixed ?

You can sometimes see if you look down the oil filler hole. If someone starts the engine and you look down the hole, if nothing is going round, it's snapped/come off.

it makes a sound like a hair dryer?
sounds like the engine isnt turning at all... its just the starter which is turning ?
are you sure the engine is turning? i.e. are the belts (alternator, etc) turning?

Sounds like a hairdryer?

Sounds like the engine has no compression so Cam Belt is going to be favorite. The Scraping noise could have been the belt being stripped.

Sorry about your troubles.

Sorry to hear of your woe's Mc fly, does sound like a Cam Belt, there seems to be a spate of belt failures at the moment, at least 3 people have posted about it this week.
Lucky you'r still in Warrenty. (Presumably)

I had the same with my TI (same 2.0 Tspark) the cambelt tensioner disintegrated and all valves were bent, so no compression, starting just produced a turbine sound. I had 8000 km and all was fixed on waranty, the tensioner was 'made in Canada' and had a bad reputation (still has) also used in Opels and Renaults.
The bill was around 3000 euro (but Alfa paid)
good luck
