Variator Change Needed - Should it have been done
OK, a few questions for you knowledgeable Alfa chaps!
I've got the diesel sound from my 1.6 petrol 147... So I assume the variator is shot.
1. Now, am I right in thinking firstly that this it is not essential to get this fixed?
2. Secondly, about how much should I expect to pay to get this fixed?
3. I heard on the grapevine that this is much cheaper to fix if it's done at the same time as a cambelt change (because most of the cost is labour, which is duplicated when changing cambelt), is that right? So should I feel hard done by that I got the cambelt changed about 18 months ago (by one of the very well-respected and recommended Alfa specialists), and nobody suggested that I consider getting this done at the time?
4. One final question - I have a strange new brief scratchy type sound coming from the engine bay just after starting the ignition, just a couple of seconds. Could that be in any way related, or is it more likely a starter motor issue or something more serious...?
