147 oil problem.
A friend of mine has a 2001 147 with 34k miles on the clock. It was bought through a non-Alfa dealer 4 months ago.
He came to ask me my opinion on a oil consumption problem with the car, it was consuming 1l of oil per week, at an average distance 330 miles (530km). I advised that this was an extrodanary level and I would be surprised to see a newer car such as his burning 1l per 1000 miles (1600km). I said it may be either leaking from around the valves or the piston rings, as no other means of escape were visable. He also has quite a bit of carbon deposit in the exhaust.
He returned the car to the dealer who immediatly suspected that the piston rings were faulty and sent the car in to their own workshop for repair.
Cleverly, they contacted an Alfa main-dealer to get a second opinion on the mater, and after some discussion it was decided that the cause of the problem was that the oil manufacturer used during it service prior to resale was incorrect. The main-dealer told the non-Alfa dealer to replace the current oil and filter, using only Mobil-1 10W-40 semi synthetic oil.
The car has now been returned to the owner with the assurance that it is fixed!
I see that there is mention of oil consumption issues in 147 forum, but does this sound like a huge fob, or does Mobil-1 oil have magical properties like sealing piston ring gaps big enough for a bus to drive through???
I think that the first owner had the foot planted from day one and didn't care about the engine!
