i have sucessfully repaired a crack in a steel sump with chemical metal before - you need to drain the oil, and if possible leave it drained for at least a morning (hide ALL keys) clean the area with thinners, then apply chemical metal in large quantities. there will inevitably be some seepage out of the crack, so applying a wide strip of chemical metal will ensure a decent fix, as the residual oil wont be able to spread outside of the crack area.
can work very well, clean clean clean is the watchword for success.
it was only supposed to be a temporary repair until the sump could be welded ( very custom sump for a very unusual application - a rover V8 in a ford cortina)
when we went to weld the sump we couldn't actually get the chemical metal off, so left it there. it showed no sign of leaking a year later when i got rid of the car.
