How do you take off the gear shift knob?

I've just bought a new Momo gear knob for my Alfa 156. Now I've been assured that to put these on its a simple case of using the kit that it comes with plus allen keys. Now the worrying bit. Having looked at my standard gear knob it doesn't look like it has any allen key slots, no easy unscrew feature and no way of getting it off. So seriously if anyone knows how to get them off without causing damage to the gearbox please let me know.

I think it is a hacksaw job.
So is the handbrake grip.
