They're cheap because people are letting them go cheaply. I'd like to sell mine on for something with more luggage room but it's not worth losing that amount of money on what I paid for it.
Gearbox wise, if you get trouble with a selespeed box which is rare, but still possible it's a lot to get it fixed, the manual boxes are fine and nice to drive. On the whole, and Alfa is no better or worse than anything else, the only things to have gone wrong on mine are the bosh electrics sensors common on any German diesel and the cambelt snapped on the same engine as they put in Saabs and Vectras. The old reputation of unreliable rust buckets is long over, 147s are no less reliable than a Golf or an Audi A3.
The Alfa diesels are a great balance of power and economy for an every day car, the 2-litre TS engines are great fun and the 3.2 GTAs are mental!
