1.6 will do around 30-35 mpg combined cycle.
Common problems are oil starvation (as some can use quite a lot of oil in normal use and neek topped up on a weekly basis), Variator worn out (diesel sound on startup. Its the widget that controls the variable valve timing), cambelts prone to failure (change every 3 years OR 36000 miles or risk failure).
They are very revvy engines and come alive around 4000 rpm. They also sound quite good for a 1.6!
I could not compare prices with toyota- have no idea.
Both cars are around 1300 KG if I recall correctly.
