Re: A minute before buying 156 V6 - Questions
Drive it down a bumpy road and listen for knocking noises, that would indicate woorn syuspension arms, then find a smooth road and drive steady in third at @ 2500rpm and boot it, the pick up should be smooth, if it feels lumpy and warning lights flash then there is coil/plug/throttle body problems, check the filler cap for milky oil and the water for a rainbow film, the radiator is at that age now when it will begin to rot so brush your fingers over it to ensure it's in sound condition, the temp guage should sit at 90 and not vary more than 3' whilst running, if it drops too far then the thermostat is gone, if it goes higher then the water pump could be a problem. Now the electrics, check the rear tail lights with the ignition OFF, if one is dimly lit then you need a rev counter, all things to bear in mind as well as the possibilty that it may be £400 p/a road tax if it's late 2001.
