This is the new Alfa Romeo 156 which arrives here in the metal for its Sydney Motor Show debut in October.
The Giugiaro/Italdesign facelift represents the first substantial change to the 156 since its European launch in 1997.
Styling change giveaways include the new, larger Alfa Romeo "shield" grille together with changed headlights and bumpers. At the rear, the profile of the car is different, with new tail lights and boot lid shape.
Interior changes include a new dashboard and two-coloured door trims that match the leather upholstery. There's also more leather on the dashboard and door trims than in the current 156.
Mechanically, the most significant changes are for the European market diesel models, with the 1.9 litre JTD gaining a six-speed gearbox, and the launch of a five-cylinder 2.4 litre 20-valve diesel that uses Fiat's new Multijet technology to deliver 129kW and what Alfa is calling new levels of low emissions and fuel economy.
Australian Alfa Romeo importer Ateco expects the new 156 will be offered here in the same versions as the existing range -- 156 JTS, 156 Selespeed and 156 2.5 V6 sedans, and JTS and Selespeed in the Sportwagon. The 156 GTA won't change yet, as it isn't included in the initial line-up of the new 156.
Pricing and Australian specifications for the new 156 will be announced when it goes on sale in October.
