Re: Just bought an GT 3.2 V6
I think the cambelt change normally costs about £500-£600 at an indie. And while you're there, the plugs should be changed too, cause getting to the rear ones is a pain in the arse, inlet manifold off job.
I think the belt kit is over £200, so add in labour, cam cover gaskets, VAT.. You should really get a £500 discount. If there is no history of a belt change it NEEDS doing. Getting to 65k on an original belt is good going, they don't normally make it this far. Failure is usually at 40-50k. It is pretty urgent that it is done, but its not just a belt change, you need to change the tensioner and both idlers, cambelt failure is normally caused by either a tensioner or an idler failing first..
Then there's the waterpump, this needs to be changed for one with a metal impellor, as these cars came with plastic ones that crack and allow the water to flow back through the pump, letting the car overheat. Cambelt needs to be removed to change the pump so it needs to be done at the same time.
This job really needs to be tackled by experienced specialists, or by a proper motor engineer not a workshop mechanic on £7 an hour.
