My 2.0 Selespeed will not change from gear2 into gear3 when hot (in traffic). It will change down into those gears and is perfectly OK when on the open road. Is there an oil cooler which may be blocked? All suggestions welcome!
Thanks for your replies guys. The oil level is OK (I just checked).Gears 1 and 2 are working fine, it is 3 and 4 which are the problem when hot. When you try and change into gear 3 there is a delay of about 5 seconds and then it goes straight into gear 5.
I had a similar problem with it going 1-2-5 when hot. The dealer said that was a "safe mode" which was triggered by a faulty sensor (ah, the old "faulty sensor" again) whihc was replaced under warranty.
I can't quite see what that would achieve as a safe mode - you'd just rev the ******** off it in 2nd to get to 5th, so where's the minimisation of system damage that those things are supposed to do?
Seemed to fix it at the time, but it still does it very occasionally, in heavy traffic an lots of clutch slippng, so he could have been talking ****e...

Alfajack, thanks for your reply. Do you know which sensor was faulty or possibly the part no of the replacement bit? My car is out of warrenty and I will do the work myself. Our local dealer has a very poor reputation for anything other than routine service.
hi, i had exactly the same problem with my 147 - took 18 months for them to fix. The first gear box eventually disintegrated and even the replacement was faulty - apparently only now recognised as a fault in the system - think it is something to do with a pin or something right inside the gearbox which moves too much when hot and jams the system (not very technical i know!) - before this latest fix (which seems to have worked) I had had virutally the whole of the selespeed system replaced and a total of 6 weeks off the road. If you need anymore help message me and I'll give you the name of my dealers technician.
A common and known problem which I also had. A replacement of my Selespeed pump and the installation of the Selespeed software in December 2001 known as Campaign 4407 resolved the problem. Relay this info' to a main dealer.
FYI Alfa brought out 4407 to address this specific problem!
