Re: abs and snow?

As another poster states. The ABS system is comparitive and will compare wheel speeds. When you spin the driven wheels and the others are stationary or moving slowly it confuses the system which switches off. You will find the same happens if you use a rolling road. The system recalibrates once the car is back operating as it expects.

This is incorrect I'm afraid; if it is happening then your ABS is faulty. The ABS knows that the vehicle cannot stop instantly so will interpret this as a four wheel lock up and dump the brake pressure in each wheel; the wheels then spin up to the vehicle speed at which point pressure is re-applied, wheels lock again etc. The lack of stopping is purely down to the lack of traction.

Best stopping distance is achieved when you brake just a little less than the point of locking up. This is incredibly difficult to predict; most drivers will only beat the ABS stopping distance after many practice runs on a repeatable surface.

Best stopping distance with ABS triggered is achieved by pressing the brake pedal as hard as you can and declutching.

These are the facts from my training and driving experience (skidpan and winter testing in Sweden) when working on ABS/TC/ESP.

PS to all the others with ABS lamps coming on and off - the ABS lamp should only come on if there is a fault. You're not mistaking it for the traction control/ESP warning lamp are you?
