Re: GT - A paragon of reliability?
No more or less reliable than a 156 or 147. Each variety has their issues, a few of which are below:
1.9 JTDm 16v
Waterpump seizure snaps the cambelt
EGR valve problems causes bad running and poor economy
Boost hoses can split
Clutch release bearing can get very stiff and brittle, causing heavy clutch
Often underpowered from the factory
Low cambelt intervals
Diff failure - can happen at very low mileage, a known weakness
Waterpump impellor splits, causing overheating, fix requires cambelt change and fitment of 3.0 GTV waterpump.
Cambelts often snap way before the cambelt interval for this engine, which is officially 5 years or 72K miles which ever comes first.
These issues are no different to other cars fitted with the same engines. I think the GT's percieved reliability stems partly from improved build quality in general (lemons are still getting through however), and low proportion of GTs vs 147s and 156s, which tend to be older and more likely to have suffered neglect or more wear and tear.
