The rain sensor is sending infrared signals to the windscreen. The windscreen reflects these signals so the signals go to a receiver. If the windscreen gets wet, a part of the signal gets lost by distortion and the receiver will get less signals. A little computer can calculate the intensity of the rain by the amount of signals it receives.
Seems a bit bloody complicated. My 145's rain sensor is much simpler. I look through the windscreen, if there's rain on it, I move a little stalk, and the wipers work.

It also has special darkness sensing lights, corner sensing steering, and someone-needing-to-enter-or-exit-the-vehicle sensing opening doors. All again involving me seeing the need and pressing the relevant button.
You 147 owners are just lazy!
What's that? No 145 owners allowed in this lounge, especially not sarcastic little b@st@rds?
I'll get me coat...
Mel, you're welcome to use any comment I post as a signature. After all, it gets much more air-time when it's on your posts than mine, so my brilliance and comic genius is shared with more of the people.

Sorry all, I kind of hijacked this thread. But Selespeed seemed to have already provided the definitive answer, so I thought it was about time some sillyness was added.
David, only one thing can be said to you:
I'll vacate the premises now...

The light was reflected off the window at a flat angle, and the amount of reflection off the window was used to measure the amount of rain.
This works because the refraction changes when there is water and not air on the outside of the window. Subsequently more or less light gets reflected back from the window.
