Hmmm Aux drive belt

Had a busy day today - plugs, oil filters thermostat etc all went swimmingly until we turned our attention to the "aux drive belt". old one came off easily (not too easily...) but could not get the replacement on for love or money (or swearing). compared the lengths of old and new and there is a few mm difference. I will allow that the old one may have enjoyed a bit of stretching but there was no way the new one would go on. I was taking the tension off to the extent that i was in danger of breaking the tensioner - no more left to give. At the factors he may have said there were two types (he said that about everything else i bought) - would there be two so close in length but not quite close enough? it's a 1.8ts with a/c - i don't think that the with/without a/c is the problem - a whole pulleys circumference of difference i would notice. Sorry to waffle on - any advice?

Re: Aux drive belt

There is a big difference in length between the non air con cars and the aircon ones.

The correct way to fit the belt is to bolt on the moving tensioner, thread the belt over the other pulleys , then lever the tensioner over anticlockwise, and then when the belt is over release it so that the spring can take the tension.

I take it that is what you are doing?

There is a knack to it and you will need a 15mm spanner on the top bolt threaded under the belt so that the belt is on the correct side of it. Another pair of hands helps a lot as the belt comes off the PAS pulley very easily.

You will never be cool driving a Vauxhall.
