156 Timing Belt Confusion - Please Help!
I hope someone can help regards a small problem I have with my wifes 1.8ts 156 sportswagon.
The weekend before Christmas, it broke down on her at low speed. The AA technician who was callled out to her diagnosed a snapped timing belt and expensive repairs as a result. He towed it to the Alfa dealership in Aberdeen who is Arnold Clark.
The next day they called me to say they wanted £550 just to strip head to see what damage had been done , but that there would be damage and I was looking at a bill in region of £1800. I instead towed it home myself and parked it drive over the holidays thinking that repairing it was not going to be economical and I would be as well selling for apres or repairs.
I was out today to take some pictures of it to put on ebay and while I had the bonnet up I had a look at where I thought the timing belt should be, the toothed belt on the left hand side of the engine under plastic covers?????? and to my surprise its still there, nice and tight and in seemingly good condtion.
Big Question I am asking myself now, is, is that the timing belt and if it is, then wahts wrong with the car and why did AA man get it wrong and why did Arnold Clark obviously not even look at it?
I would welcome any suggestions on why car would just lose power like it did and just coast to a halt and what next course of action should be.
PS wife said that as car died, there was a warning message come up on console for Engine Control System Failure (EOBD)
Any thoughts anyone.
Cheers in Advance
