Selespeed reliability?

Thinking of buying a 147 and was trying to stay away from the selespeed models as i'm worried they could be problematic, the only ones with the spec i would like are nearly always selespeeds so how reliable are these?

What should i look for when viewing/test driving?

Thanks Colin

Re: Selespeed reliability?

Check all 3 ways of changing gear.

Paddle shift

Also ensure you go through all gears all ways (both up and down the box) and at slow speed and as high a speed as possible.

Also, when you open the drivers door, listen for the actuator/pump priming.
It should make a buzzing noise for a few seconds (not a split second).

Some other guys will be along shortly with some more info, im sure

Re: Selespeed reliability?

Selespeed gets a lot of bad press but its not always justified, though it certainly has its fair share of problems, but consider its a hydraulic actuating system mounted onto a manual gearbox.
Personally I have had years of fun with mine, replaced the pump only (pump motor brushes wore out) with the selespeed system, but had to have the gearbox rebuilt when a bearing went (circaŁ1200 inc clutch/service).
My point is that when the gearbox failed it 'appears' that its the selespeed system thats at fault (lost gears/wouldnt change gear etc), but, it was the manual gearbox that caused it - the selespeed system was and always has been fine (phew! - found a bit of wood to touch).

Search on here for peoples opinions, just remain open minded as to the root cause of the problem, not the symptoms.

Personally, I love it!

Re: Selespeed reliability?

Harry, you speak my language ! Selespeed always get the blame
even if the car des not start due to an empty fuel tank..

checklist for a happy Sele life
1. have a sound battery
2. check selespeed oil (connect a container to the breather tube)
3. if you have a diagnostic system (Alfadiag, Unidiag) run a check
every 3 months or so
4. keep some spare relays in the car

My 156 sele is now 10 years old and runs like new !

Re: Selespeed reliability?

The only trouble with Seles is the owners not caring for them, It's a hydralic system and as such should have the fluid replaced every so often, owners don't have this done and the old fluid degrades the system and cause trouble, I would happily own a Sele, but if I do now it's going to have to be a 3.2.

Re: Selespeed reliability?

and above all understanding,

our new silly seemed to bleep at us at every occasion, went back and re-read the manual, and because we now understand and follow the instructions it is fine, no bleeps, no messages etc etc
