The thermostat itself (stating the obvious) operates independently of both these, so if the calibration between the three elements is off at all, you can't just trust to the the gauge to tell you what's going on!

Sorry guys, I realise this doesn't provide any answers, but it might help stopping jumping to conclusions.
Partly true, but the guage will still give you a rough idea of how the thermostat is operating.

i had a new rad and stat fitted on thurs and scince then its been 75 - 80 when travelling 90 while stationary. the heater is working better than ever. and im happy with that

I've had two 156 V6's and they have both behaved the same. I got all worked up about the "low" running temperature, changed stats with no real improvement. It goes up to 90 in traffic and 70/80 whilst cruising.

I just don't bother anymore.
