147 cam belt problem

Hi this is my first post following an embarrassing breakdown yesterday in Canterbury had to be rescued by RAC who tell me that they think the cambelt has gone on my 147 1.6 53reg with 43k on the clock - belt has not been changed even tho always serviced by Alfa specialists (not main dealer tho). Anyway, it is now at main dealer in Canterbury awaiting a quote. I see on here that someone else had same problem caused damage to valves etc and main dealer quoted 2500 to repair! The car is only worth about 3k so if get quoted that figure I don't know what to do..... Any guidance welcome in particular if anyone knows of an Alfa specialist in Kent (north Kent ideally) as only recently moved here and not yet found one. Many thanks.

Re: 147 cam belt problem

depending on the damage it may be cheaper to get a replacement engine and then service it before you fit it, if you cant fit it maybe a local mechanic can do it for you would still work out cheaper than alfa dealership. good luck

Re: 147 cam belt problem

From previous postings, I'd say you'd save about £1,000 going to an independent.

Consider a used engine, which is probably about the same fitted.

As to local indies; do a search on this (Independent garage Recommendations).

But don't be afraid to go further afield for the right place though; car transportation doesn't have to be expensive, have a look at this site where you post your requirements and transportation companies bid for the work (can be cheap in the current environment for otherwise empty return trips).
