Hey, I have a 99 156 2.0ts and it's been pretty trouble free so far (touch wood). I have it about 9 months.
After I had it for a week the passenger side dipped light blew so I replaced it myself. It blew again last week so I went and got a replacement bulb. I got a pair of those extreme brilliance lightbulbs from halfords and it was grand for a day. Then I noticed when I was driving that it was flicking on and off so I thought it might be a loose connection. Checked it and found that the plastic housing for the two connectors was half burned! Half of it just crumbled in my hand like ash!
I thought it was perhaps because of the EB bulb so I went and got a standard one the next day. Put it in, turned on the lights while parked, after about two minutes it started smoking again! I've since left the bulb out of it and wrapped the two wires separately in insulation tape. It's not that much of a problem as I have the fogs on anyway so people can see it's a car and not a bike.
This or anything similar happen to anyone else? Any theories on the cause? A short or something? Did something get caught in the fitting and start burning?
Really glad I caught it in time and that my bella didn't go up in flames!
BTW I never touched the driver's side light.
