156 engine tray

Hi Guys,

Following my previous post (poor performance at low revs) and all your comments, I had a good look under the bonnet this weekend, checked the air filter condition, etc...

First of all, one of the 4 bolts that keep the cover of the airfilter box to the box itslef was missing but it looks like the top is tightly attached the the airfilterbox, still....

I got scare for a minute after loosening 3 of the hose clips tightening the airpipes in order to remove the cover of the airfilter box ... I couldn't put them back in place .... who does manufacture this type of clip ! Rushed to Halfords to buy the specialise tool but no one inlcuding the service mechanics at the AA service knew waht to use to put them back in place, so I end up buying the replacement hose clip that can be tightemned using a screw driver.

Back home, I tired once again to put the original cilps in place and found out that a normal wrench tool could do the job !

So, finally the experience turned into a safe first car DYI job !

What I however discover was that the engine tray, replaced last week was slightly different from the one fitted previously.

First of all it is made of fiberglass while the previous one was out of plastic ... but look at the picture below !!!

Does anyone know while the engine tray has an opening there, at the front passgenger side.

The car is LHD so for UK reader look at the corner front driver side ...

Would this tray have be re-used from a different car ? Then I should have paud for a new one !

Anyone with a CD part that could show me what shape should this tray have ???

Having said that, I thing that I'll will replace the airfilter by a performance one and have the sport airintake fitted .... as suggested... well, when I have the budget !

Apparently the hole is there to cool the power steering fluid! If you look upwards into the hole, you'll see a coil of pipework which is cooled by this hole. wink

Thanks Sillyspeed,

As funny as this may sound .... but I don't think the tray that was previoulsy fitted had this "feature" ! I guess that this fiberglass tray will last longer that the plastic one !

So, at the end of the day, nothing to worry about !

Very interesting......

I've never seen one with a hole in it before. My tray is the original type - it has the slits in it but not the large opening.

Doesn't look very safe - you could catch a cat or a rabbit in that!!!!!!!!
