So, I did the 60 mile journey yesterday (which actually took two hours rather than the predicted hour because of the M25
) to get my wheels changed over only to discover when I got there that the garage I usually use hadn't bothered putting the lockers back in my car after replacing a wheel a couple of weeks ago.
Several angry phone calls later and they cleared me to pay for the nuts to be broken off (there was no way I was driving all the way back again to pick them up) and two hours later, the new wheels were on!
Since I was asking before and nobody seemed to have comparision shots of the 16"s bs. the 17"s, I took (pretty poor iphone) photographs for anyone who's interested. It genuinely looks a huge amount better and I was really surprised at just how much difference it made to the handling.
A car that I've enjoyed driving has become a car that I'm genuinely thrilled to be behind the wheel of (the feeling all Alfas should give their owners!). When replacing the wheels they also discovered that the rear suspension leafs were very loose (something else I will have to be very mad at my previous garage about
: it should have been a warranty repair that they denied was a problem), so now the car feels planted, stable, and doesn't wobble from side to side at all. I'm furious at Bishops, could not be happier with the wheels and the service I received from Veloces, they were polite, understanding, and very quick (especially considering it took two of their mechanics tow hours with chisels and drills to get the old wheels off)!
If you're unhappy with your GT's handling, the bigger wheels are an upgrade I can heartily recommend and get them to check that suspension at the same time just in case yours needs tightening too!
The ridiculously long round trip was well worth it despite the problems and I can really recommend the service at Veloces.
