Slightly depends on engine size - a 1.6 might be slightly cheaper than a 2.0, but there won't be much in it. From your description I'd say it does need a full engine replacement....you should be able to pick up a second-hand engine for £600 - £700 - but unless you have proof of cambelt change recently, you should get it changed before the engine is fitted - which will be another £150+. Then you'll have to pay for the engine to be swapped...
So you're likely to be marginal with your budget, I'm afraid. Which way you go depends on how much you think your car is worth - a 1.6 sold on the bay yesterday for around £1200....but that was cheap. Your car as it is is probably going to fetch £300 - £400 on the bay..
