156 1.6 ts misfire... HELP!
first post on here and im in need of some help.
My best friend tom has the 156, and has a misfire and asked me to take a look. its a 51 plate with a plastic engine cover, if that makes a difference.
Firstly, i read the fault codes and had a cyl 3 misfire, which i erased and the engine management light went out, but the misfire stayed. i disconnected number 3 coil pack, which made no difference to the misfire, so i condemed the coil pack. tight ass tom found a coil pack for 25 quid on the net and ordered it. As i fitted it, the coil we ordered made no difference. After removing all the coils i decided to test the spark, i could only do this with the smaller 4 plugs as the main plugs are spring loaded into the coil. So anyway, using the same lead, plug (small ones) i attached each coil and cranked the engine to see if it sparked. all three coils did, the old one we replaced didnt and the ' new ' one didnt. so i suspect a dodgy coil. he has since ordered a brand new part which is coming this week.
The engine starts for about 10seconds, runs fine... then misfires BADLY, pops back a few times, loads of smoke, then cuts out.
My question is, am i barking up the wrong tree here? is there anything really common that causes these symptoms? Thanks for the help in advance,
