1.6 or 1.8 to 2.0?

a mate at work has offered me his 2000 "V" registered 1.6 or 1.8 alfa 156 because the engine is knocking, he says it`s the crankshaft after a cambelt failure, i have a spare engine but it`s a 2.0. As far as i`m aware the engine swap is relatively straight forward but can i simply change the engine over and put the 2.0 in or would i have to change a number of other things too?

Re: 1.6 or 1.8 to 2.0?

Pretty sure everything will physically fit - not sure that the 1.6 or 1.8 ECU will run the 2.0 efficiently, and I think the 1.6 exhaust is slightly smaller than the 2.0. IIRC the final drive gearing differs on the smaller engine, too...

Re: 1.6 or 1.8 to 2.0?

If it's a EURO 3 engine, then the exhaust is the same.
The 1.6 ECU can run the 2.0 engine without any remap. However you cannot install the variable inlet manifold.
If you really want the full power of the 2.0 however, you will have to remap the 1.6 ECU. By doing this you do not need to replace the ECU, keylocks etc.

or get someone like AngeL, red dot etc to upload a 2.0 map into your 1.6 ecu...

Re: 1.6 or 1.8 to 2.0?

its a V reg so cant be a euro 3 engine, but will a small exhaust be a problem?
best deal is to swap engine, remap ecu, tehn look at changing the exhaust, but wait til you get more posts on here as to how much of the exhaust needs changing, could cost as much as the remap!

Re: 1.6 or 1.8 to 2.0?

The exhaust was the same for all Euro2 TS 156 with the exception of the rear box which got a chrome tip on 2.0 versions, except for the Italian Police versions which didn't use the chrome tipped rearbox on their 2.0 .

The manifold was different on the 1.6 though.
