Ok I bought my first Alfa in September a 08 plate GT Blackline JTDm. I went through what a lot of people go through and looked at various ‘more practical’ alternatives (BMW 1 and 3 series, Golf and Jetta and even a 150bhp Astra Diesel). Then whilst on half term with my 7 year old I took a trip to the local dealers in Amersham - next thing you know I have bought a blackline and pick it up the next day etc... Cool!!!
The life of my car is probably different to a lot of enthusiast on here (or maybe it isn’t??). I use her to commute to west London from Herts every day in the week (50+ miles), and she is the main family car. I have now doubled the milage, she has had her first service (which was a good experience!) and I can safely say it is a truly fantastic car. This weekend we went up to see my folks in Cumbria from London and she used half a tank of fuel - on an average speed of just over 70mph 300+ miles (work that one out) - and also felt very assured in what seemed the worst fog, rain and general crap blightly conditions (the last thing you need is wooly handling!)
You can probably say this about many a car these days - but do they still turn heads? - mine does! (even when it is covered in salt and general motorway filth in the current wnitery conditions).
My niggles have all been nothing to do with the design and engineering of the car.
1. Cruise control packs in after 3 weeks - discover that it is the drivers mat slipping onto a switch - got mat clips now and sorted it thanks to ARLN on Alfa owner for helping me with that one.
2. Rear creaking sound - worried about the dreaded gt rear creak - turns out to be the split folding rear seat is not engaged properly on drivers side - great!
3. Rattling from rear - turns out to be my 7 yr old exploring the ski hatch and not shutting it properly!
And of course the best thing is only seeing another GT every now and again - and that puts a smile on my face - try doing that in any Audi or Beemer - it begs the question why is there not more on the road?
I think I have made a great choice and hopefully I will still have a smile on my face at the next service interval!!!
Until then... happy alfa’ing!
