Re: Buying tips on 156 Sportwagon please?
Hi, i have one and i really love it but here is an honest account - read into this what you will.
I bought my one 18 months or so ago absolutely mint on on 46000 miles with full main dealer history and one owner from new. As an idea so far i have had to re-bush the entire front suspension including anti roll bar bushes (poly ones from eb spares). Do the cambelt (i had to buy the timing blocks from alfa at £85 and wait six weeks) as it had not been done, replaced the exhaust - went for bespoke stainless as cheaper than alfa one. Also had to take the car to Main dealer for multiple motor control failure light resets £39 per time, re line the brakes front and rear, remove and re seal the roof aerial as when it rained very hard the water poored in through it and stained the headlining (area to look out for). Now looking to replace dodgy throttle pedle as potentiometer sometimes trips the ecu warning light as does the random but almost contsant o2 sensor trips and now has developed an iffy idle. The rear shocks on mine are the "nivomat" self levelling type and one of them its on its way, they are megga money so i have to buy a pair of different rear shocks-(after market) and new springs to replace them. The list goes on.
I am lucky i guess as i am an experienced egineer and do all the work myself so i only pay for parts not labour oh and warning light resets. i recon the car has cost me another £1500-£2000 one way or another since owning it ontop of the £4500 i paid. Mine is a JTS petrol and to be fair they deisels may be more reliable??
This is my first Alfa and as i said despite all this i really love it. It handles and performs very well and looks lovely, gorgeous interior etc. I am certainly not trying to put you off buying it as you will love driving it but i wanted you to go into it with your eyes open so to speak.
So to some up. i love mine to bits as Sportwagons are in my opinion the best looking estate car you can buy, they are very small inside so no wardrobe moving will be happening but they are comfortable good looking and perform well in their class. However my personal experience is that they are not very reliable and you should be prepared to spend a bit extra year upon year for maintenance than if you were to by the dreaded Focus or Astra.
Good luck mate
