147 Gear stick problem

I'm am about to buy a second hand alfa 147 1.6 T-Spark (2001). It looks to be a lovely car. I had a little test drive in it yesterday evening and seeing it again today. Has 60,000 on the clock.

I noticed that it was a little difficult to put into 3rd gear as the gear stick doesn't really 'spring' back into neutral.

Is this a common problem and is it a serious problem to fix? If its likely to be a costly problem, I may walk away from this deal.

Is there anything else I should look out for before buying this?

Re: 147 Gear stick problem

sounds like the gear quadrant has seized up,you can replace it or just
free it off, its where the two gear cables join the gear box
part No 46759824 £25 inc

good luck

Re: 147 Gear stick problem

Check the oil level make sure the owner has kept it topped up and find out whether
a) cam belt has been done recently - due every 3 years or 36k may not have been done at 6 years,
b) have spark plugs been changed, they are due at 60k and cost approx £ 60 for the plugs
c) check the condition of the brake discs and pads

Re: 147 Gear stick problem

I had the similar sticky gear problem - Not too major of a problem and does seem rather common - in my case it was the bushes and a good alfa specialist should be able to sort that out for you (about an hour's job). Still I would certainly use that as a bargaining point if you're going to buy that car.
