It depends on the age of your car. I was in exactly your situation in the summer when i bought my 2004 156. Apparently up to 2001 it is easy to code the key to your car by any old locksmith but after that Alfa use a rolling code system and BOTH keys need to be coded to a new code in the car. Even local alfa specialists Alfashop didn't fancy the job and sent me to main dealer. List price £185 for new key + work. All I paid in the end was for the cost of the key, as I assumed the car came with 2 and they were quite reasonable about it.
Bottom line: if newer than 2001, gotta go to main dealer. sorry
