Increase in oil consumption

Why from putting maybe 2 litres in between services has this gone up to about 4, and also why is there no apparent pattern to this consumption.
With the recent cold weather I feel it has gone up markedly (have put in nearly 1 litre in the last 1K miles). Just don't get it.
Is it brand specific? I am using 10-40 semi synth but not sticking to one brand. Would a shot of ZX-1 help do you think? Or indeed the dreaded slick 50?
The oil in there seems a bit 'syrupy' but only 3K to go to next service so not going to drop it out now. Also with consumption at this rate it is getting renewed between services anyway.
My tailpipe is always a bit black, but if it was burning oil it should have a kind of oily residue which it hasn't. more sooty but usually just wipes clean.
Any thoughts foilks??
Or am I being paranoid

Si puo nascere Alfista, si puo anche diventare Alfista.
Ma si muore sempre come Alfista

Re: Increase in oil consumption

I would look on the Selenia website and use what is recommended for your car. The oil is very reasonably priced from Alfa dealers and is the stuff Alfa put in at the factory.
