Timing Belt

How do you know the timing belt has snapped?

I know this is a stupid question but I'm buying a car for spares n engine is turning over but wont start after a new engine was put in but I have no proof of new engine?

Re: Timing Belt

Take the top timing belt cover bolts off( allen key) and bend the cover back to see the belt. Problem is it may not be broken but have teeth stripped causing the same engine damage.
Checking the log book with the engine number would tell if it had a different changed.
Best of luck.
