Going to change my car after Christmas, been looking at maybe a 159, saying that I am very tempted to buy a 2007 Golf GTI. 200bhp plus great handling...I am being tempted by the dark side...help!!!!
We have a Brera 2.4 JTDM and a Mark V GT Tdi.
I know our Golf isn't a GTi but it looks the part and goes OK. Handling is very tidy and the car just "works" if you know what I mean (albeit with some issues). We mostly take the Golf away on trips where practicality matters (read: where it's going to get muddy
A colleague has a Mk V GTi and I've spent a bit of time in it, as we cover quite high mileages. Both our GT and his GTi are well-built, fine-handling and tidy cars, but no-one takes a second look at either and despite the virtues of the Golf, neither is a "pleasure" to own (he says the same). Its more of a "Drive. Park. Forget." kind of thing.
I actually think there's a lot to be said for that: I have invested a lot of money and emotion in the Alfa and it can be tiring. But if the Golf was my only car - coming from an Alfa - I would always miss that "certain something". I am not looking down on the Golf - we have one - just commenting on the ownership "feel".
I spent a long time cleaning the Golf over the weekend, following a long drive in it. When I was done, I popped to the shops in the Brera and within seconds I remembered the difference. I think a 159 (which I looked into before going for the Brera) would make you feel similarly happy.
But really, it's down to what you need and want and a period in a GTi would not really be a hardship.
