OK, are you leting the car complete the check stage or turning the key straight away?
It's a diesel so you should be waitng for the glow plug light to extinguish, and by that time the check will be over, if it's not doing it then, then it's probably a glitch in the ECU program, petrol models come up with oil level low when you throw the key round.
But if it's doing it after you've waited and and the engine is cold then yes the temp sensor is probably faulty, it's on the thermostat housing next to the battery. For the resistances to check it out I'll have to dig my manual out, it's still packed from the move so someone else might have it to hand, I think it's 10Kohms at 20'C but I can't be positive on that.
