It's nothing to do with the MAF. It's all to do with the thermostat, if the temp isn't passing 75'c then the engine is running in cold state and chucking in more fuel, when it hits 3000 ish then the variator kicks in and advances the timing 25' that is the surge you feel and is why power picks up as at that point the ECU slightly cuts the fuel to suit the new engine running condition. Your engine therefore is fine, it's the cooling system that's snookered, so relace the thermostat and the power will impress you all the way through the range.
