GT CODE failure warning but engine starts?

Over the past week or so, when I start my '54 reg GT in the morning, my computer flashes up a motor control system failure warning (engine symbol) followed immediately after by an immobiler failure warning (padlock symbol). According to my owner's handbook, these two symbols showing indicates a failure of the Alfa Romeo CODE system - the system that immobilses the engine to prevent theft.

However, the car starts perfectly well and drives without any unusual experiences. Again, according to the manual, the engien shouldn't start at all. If I turn the ignition off and restart the car, the messages go away.

Any ideas, what might be causing the warning lights to come on?
