Manual Gearbox Weirdness . . .

Hey everyone . . .

I wonder if anyone can shed some light on a weird issue I've just had with the gearbox on my 52 plate manual 147 2l.

Basically, with no prior indication of a problem, I got stuck in 3rd gear. Clutch fully depressed (obviously!?) gear lever totally stuck. I had a few cars behind and in front of me . . . so executive decision, I 'forced' it out of gear.

Pulled over immediately, turned everything off for a mo. Then worked the gearbox through the gears, foot on clutch with the engine off.

Everything felt fine, except 3rd still felt a little spongy, a tad more resistance going in and out than usual. However after going through the gears a few times, it started to feel ok again.

I carried on about 20miles home, with no further incident - except that maybe 3rd felt a bit 'weird' still. By the time I was home, I'm pretty sure all the gears felt just fine again.

So, do I need to worry? This has never happened to me on any car in about 20 years of driving? So, I'm a little confused.

Any clues / advice / suggestions / calming words would be appreciated!

The illusion of freedom will be maintained for as long as it's profitable to do so.

No ideas, but it's nice to see a non-sele gearbox problem for a change

Bit of metal or something caught somewhere?

Might be an idea to drain the gearbox oil, check for broken teeth etc, flush it out and refill with nice new stuff.

How many miles on it?

Re: Manual Gearbox Weirdness . . .

I know the box is prone to getting stuck in fourth. Here is the remedy for that........
How To... Remedy a non selecting 4th Gear

It might be a similar thing. It's caused by bits of metal getting stuck between the bottom of the box and the moving internals.

Good luck
