156 Engine/Gearbox gremlins !! HELP!!!
Hi All Alfa Fans,
My 2001, 156 2.0 TS Sportswagon's Engine or Transmission has started playing up over the last 10 days or so.
When the car is stationary, I can engage every gear & it engages as normal.
The problem is, when I pull away, it was hard to engage 2nd from 1st, but if I leave the clutch in, after about 3 to 10 seconds the gear can be selected without forcing it too hard. It also happened with other gear changes as well. Also the Engine Management Light has been coming on & off for about 6 weeks, but it appeared to be running ok & only comes on if I was using Shell V-Power fuel.
In heavy traffic, when engaging the clutch when stopping, the revs would drop & engine would almost cut out. I assumed it was either the MAF or Lambda sensor. Called the garage I use, but they could not fit me in till next week.
Today things got worse. When leaving work tonight, there was some serious clonking noises coming from the transmission/engine. I went round the block & primarily in 1st & second gear if I totally take my foot off the clutch it happens, but if I slightly leave the clutch in like on the bite, it does not happen.
If anybody, can shed a likely cause, I would appreciate it.
I replaced the gearbox & clutch, when I got the car 16 months ago & it has covered, less than 15000 miles since fitted.
Went back to work & we looked at it in the warehouse. Could not find the cause, but when the clonking happened the engine would lurch forward. I realise this is serious & while I love the car, I don't want to shell a load of dosh(£500 max to fix), just before Christmas. So do I keep it or buy a new car. Also the engine management light has gone off as well, which baffles me!!
I thought it may be the cat, with the clonking, but that would not explain the gear selection issues, in my limited opinion. I initially thought it was the Slave or master cylinder, but I'm speculating, before the clunking started. I have never experienced a problem with any of my previous cars, quite like this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
