Replacing the syncromesh = a rebuilt gearbox.
A BIG job.

Have you checked the gearbox oil level?

Re: 147 syncromesh in the gearbox

I had to have the'box rebuilt on my 145, with a new third gear and syncro. My specialist charged me £500, but this was virtually a cost price (I'd spent a fair bit there in the preceding months)
If it happened again I'd be budgeting on the best part of a grand.

Re: 147 syncromesh in the gearbox

Same thing happened to me back in the summer, 3rd gear just would not stay in place, especially around corners. The solution was a new 'box (well a low-mileage from a scrap yard), add in a new clutch (might as well whilst the gearbox is apart) and it came to about £500.

Hopefully this one isn't made of swiss cheese.

Don't rebuild it, just get a known good one to relace it, it will halve the final bill.
